To Maintain the Raw Water Supply, PDAM Tirta Kahuripan and Private Firms Plan to Build Infiltration Ponds

PDAM Tirta Kahuripan collaborated with USAID IUWASH PLUS to conduct an online seminar entitled the Infiltration Ponds to Sustain a Business in Water Supply, Anticipate Water Crisis, and Prevent Floods on Thursday (June 25, 2020).

The seminar was held to follow up the recommendation of the spring vulnerability assessment and action plan of Ciburial spring that Bogor district government and USAID IUWASH PLUS conducted in 2019.

Ciburial spring is one of the main raw water sources of PDAM Tirta Kahuripan to supply the community of Bogor district. Yet, the spring water debit has been decreasing in the last 14 years.

The spring vulnerability assessment of Ciburial found that the water debit has declined from 506 liter/second in 2005 to 330 liter/second in 2019. This issue is addressed by building 1,750 to 2,000 infiltration ponds in the catchment areas.

The Regional Secretary of Bogor district, Mr. Burhanudin, explained that the infiltration ponds will not only increase the water debit of Ciburial spring, sustains the PDAM’s water services, but it also adds water reserves of the community’s dug wells.

Further, the regional secretary hopes that the infiltration ponds will prevent damages caused by water runoff and rain water puddles, and help reduce floods in the downstream.

During this webinar, three companies expressed a commitment to building a total of 480 infiltration ponds. Those firms are PDAM Tirta Kahuripan (471 units), PT. Tirta Guna Persada (5 units), and CV Kanaka Adi Jaya (4 units).

The government of Bogor district and PDAM Tirta Kahuripan will continue approaching other stakeholders to build more infiltration ponds.
